APPG sets out vision for a more equitable global health architecture
Since autumn 2025, the APPG on Global Health & Security has been exploring the topic of global health architecture reform.
At a meeting of the group in November 2025, we heard from invited speakers on the limitations of the existing system, the need for greater equity and accountability, and the importance of strengthening country leadership and community representation. With the focus of this meeting on institutional perspectives, a shared theme throughout the discussion was the urgent need to bring Global South perspectives more fully into debates on reform.
The November meeting was supplemented by a January 2026 meeting of the group, at which experts drawn from five different regions across the world presented their recent publications in a discussion paper series coordinated by Wellcome. The discussion papers outline locally defined priorities for change, the political conditions required for reform, and the practical steps needed to move toward a more coherent and equitable global health system.
Across the two meetings, the APPG gained a deep understanding of the political and practical realities that shape reform efforts in different parts of the globe. These discussions point toward a streamlined architecture with clearer institutional mandates, stronger regional leadership, and sustainable financing, anchored by a revitalised, lean and focussed World Health Organization.
